Can You Exercise Your Brain?

Brain exercises are becoming more popular than games and trivia questions online. Developers claim that brain exercises can increase your intelligence if you practice them regularly. Although they talk about scientific studies supporting their claims, the real question is whether brain exercises actually work.

Experts say there is no clear answer. The Weighing The Evidence

Brain training can be very beneficial for seniors. Researchers discovered that certain types of brain exercises could improve mental abilities and promote independence in a study that involved more than 2800 seniors over 65.

Brain training for several weeks can make it easier to master certain skills, according to the study. People who improved their visual skills were more successful than those who trained their memory. However, they were not able see much improvement.

Some people did better on the mental tests that they had practiced during the study. The test could not confirm that these improvements had been translated into everyday life. Experts believe this could be due to the fact that participants did not have any cognitive impairment.

The study was continued, however. After ten years, the researchers brought back participants. About 60 percent reported that they were doing much better, or at least as well, with daily activities. The brain training didn’t work for half of the participants. However, there was a significant decline in the rest. They did better than the people in the other half of the control group, but not by a large margin.

Are There Any Benefits to Brain Exercise?

No. No. They won’t stop dementia and they won’t improve your intelligence. Brain training programs can be less effective than engaging your brain and keeping you learning. You can learn a language or engage in creature activities. If you like playing cards and board games, you can also play them. You don’t have to keep doing the same thing if other methods work.
